Meghalaya Court Sentences Three to 20 Years for 2013 Rape
Trio convicted for assaulting 16-year-old girl.
A special POCSO court in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills sentenced three men—Raj Roy, Ashit Chanda, and Prasenjit Das—to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment on Thursday for the repeated sexual assault of a 16-year-old girl in 2013.
Special Judge MK Lyngdoh also imposed a Rs 50,000 fine on each convict. The case stemmed from an FIR filed by the victim’s father at Shillong’s Sadar Police Station, leading to the trio’s arrest. The court further directed the Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority to provide Rs 3 lakh as compensation to the victim’s family, ensuring support for the survivor.
The verdict marks a significant step in addressing gender-based violence in the region, reinforcing accountability under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
