Meerut Metro: 120 kmph Speed, 3 Coaches, and a 30-Minute City Run

PM Modi inaugurates the Meerut Metro and the full 82 km Namo Bharat corridor connecting Delhi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated the Meerut Metro and flagged off the Namo Bharat train at Shatabdi Nagar Namo Bharat station, marking a significant milestone in regional and urban transit in western Uttar Pradesh. The prime minister rode the metro from Shatabdi Nagar to Meerut South station, where he dedicated development projects worth approximately Rs 12,930 crore to the nation. In his address, Modi highlighted the government’s focus on modernising infrastructure and enhancing ease of living for citizens through integrated transportation solutions.

The event also saw the formal dedication of the entire 82 km Delhi-Meerut Namo Bharat corridor, connecting key urban centres such as Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Modinagar, and Meerut with Delhi. The inauguration included the remaining sections of India’s first Namo Bharat Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), specifically the 5 km stretch from Sarai Kale Khan to New Ashok Nagar in Delhi and the 21 km section between Meerut South and Modipuram. With a design speed of 180 km per hour, Namo Bharat aims to provide faster intercity connectivity and reduce travel time significantly.

Strategically located as a multi-modal hub, the corridor integrates seamlessly with Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station, Delhi Metro’s Pink Line, Veer Haqeeqat Rai ISBT, and the ring road, ensuring smooth transfers for commuters. In Meerut, three additional stations—Shatabdi Nagar, Begumpul, and Modipuram—were commissioned alongside the prime minister’s inauguration. The network is expected to streamline urban mobility, reduce traffic congestion, and provide commuters with reliable high-speed options for daily travel.

In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the Meerut Metro will operate on the same infrastructure as Namo Bharat, offering maximum speeds of around 120 kmph. Covering the stretch in just 30 minutes while stopping at all scheduled stations, the metro aims to provide efficient intra-city travel that complements the regional rapid transit corridor. The integration of these two systems is designed to set a benchmark for urban and regional transit solutions in India.

Officials noted that the combined Namo Bharat and Meerut Metro services will play a significant role in reducing vehicular carbon dioxide emissions by decongesting roads. The high-speed, integrated system will also improve accessibility for commuters travelling between Meerut and Delhi, reducing the time required to cover long distances while promoting sustainable transport alternatives. Government sources emphasized that this initiative aligns with the broader vision of transforming urban transport infrastructure across the country.

The inauguration reflects the government’s commitment to modern, efficient, and sustainable public transport systems, supporting the prime minister’s vision of enhanced urban mobility. With the operationalisation of India’s fastest metro system in Meerut and the completion of the Delhi-Meerut Namo Bharat corridor, the project represents a landmark achievement in regional connectivity. Citizens can expect improved travel convenience, reduced commute times, and a significant boost to the overall quality of urban transit in the region.
