Meerut Father Plays Drums and Distributes Sweets to Celebrate Daughter's Divorce
A Meerut father celebrates his daughter's divorce with drums and sweets outside court.
In a rare and heartwarming display of support, a family in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut celebrated the divorce of their daughter, Pranita, with drums, sweets, and garlands, turning a typically somber occasion into a message of love and solidarity. Videos of the celebration outside the district court, showing relatives dancing and distributing laddoos, quickly went viral on social media.
Pranita, who wore a black T-shirt reading “My Family, My Life,” said she had tried to save her marriage, which began in 2018 with Indian Army Major Gaurav Agnihotri, and expressed gratitude for her father’s unwavering support. “Divorce proceedings had started in 2021 as well. My father supported me throughout. I hope everyone gets a family that stands by them in difficult times,” she said.
Her father, retired judge Dr. Gyanendra Sharma, explained the reasoning behind the unique celebration: “Drums were played when my daughter was born. Today, they were played again to show that a daughter’s value remains the same at every stage of her life.” Family members wore black T-shirts with Pranita’s photograph and the message, “I Love My Daughter. My Heart, My Soul.”

Pranita, the only daughter of Dr. Sharma, faced increasing harassment from her in-laws over time, which prompted her to seek a divorce. The couple has a son. Despite the personal losses her family endured, including the death of her brother in 2022, they chose to publicly support her decision and celebrate her courage in prioritizing her well-being.
The celebration has sparked widespread discussion about changing societal attitudes toward divorce in India, showing that family support can transform a stigmatized event into an empowering and positive moment. Pranita’s story has become an emblem of strength, resilience, and parental love in difficult times.
