MEA Says India, China Will Use Diplomatic And Military Channels On Border

India and China have agreed to continue using diplomatic and military channels to address unresolved border issues and prevent misunderstandings along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Thursday. The two countries held discussions focused on maintaining peace and stability in border areas while working towards resolving outstanding matters. The discussions took place during the 36th meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC) in New Delhi on August 6. The meeting was aimed at reviewing the situation along the LAC and strengthening communication between the two sides.

According to the MEA, representatives from both countries engaged in “frank” discussions on developments along the disputed border areas. The two sides emphasised that maintaining peace and tranquillity along the LAC remains important for the overall progress of bilateral relations. The Indian delegation at the meeting was led by Sujit Ghosh, Joint Secretary (East Asia) at the Ministry of External Affairs. The Chinese delegation was headed by Hou Yanqi, Director General of the Department of Boundary and Oceanic Affairs at China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During the meeting, both sides agreed to continue dialogue through established diplomatic and military mechanisms. The MEA said these channels would help address concerns, manage differences and avoid situations that could lead to tensions or miscalculations along the border. The India-China border issue has remained a key challenge in bilateral relations, particularly after tensions increased following the eastern Ladakh standoff in 2020. Since then, both countries have engaged in multiple rounds of military and diplomatic talks to ease tensions and resolve remaining issues.

India has consistently maintained that peace and stability along the border are essential for normal relations with China. New Delhi has also emphasised that the development of bilateral ties depends on ensuring that border disputes are handled through dialogue and established mechanisms. The WMCC, established in 2012, serves as a platform for officials from both countries to discuss border-related issues and coordinate efforts to maintain stability. The mechanism works alongside military-level talks and other diplomatic engagements between India and China.

The latest meeting comes amid continued efforts by both sides to manage differences and maintain communication on border matters. While some areas have seen progress through disengagement efforts, discussions on remaining issues continue through diplomatic and military channels. The MEA said both countries remain committed to resolving border-related concerns through dialogue and maintaining peace in the border regions. Further engagements are expected as part of the ongoing process to address outstanding issues along the LAC.
