MEA Condemns Reported PoK Protest Killings, Calls For Pakistan Accountability

India criticises Pakistan over alleged PoK protest killings and unrest.

India on Tuesday strongly condemned the reported killings of protesters in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK), accusing Pakistan of excessive force and human rights violations. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the international community must hold Islamabad accountable for its actions amid escalating unrest in the region.

Speaking at a media briefing in New Delhi, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India had taken serious note of reports suggesting that more than 20 people were killed during police action against protesters in various parts of PoK. He alleged that Pakistan was attempting to divert attention from its internal failings by spreading misinformation and deflecting criticism.

Jaiswal further stated that India was witnessing what he described as a pattern of “fake news and misleading narratives” emerging from Pakistan. He said these efforts were aimed at covering up alleged human rights abuses and the deteriorating situation in the region. The spokesperson asserted that the reported crackdown reflected a broader pattern of governance failures and suppression of civilian voices.

According to reports cited in the briefing, widespread protests have broken out in several areas of PoK over issues such as economic hardship, governance concerns and the allocation of reserved legislative seats. Demonstrators have also raised grievances over inflation, rising electricity bills and shortages of essential goods, leading to growing public anger in the region.

Local media reports indicate that clashes between protesters and security forces have taken place in areas including Rawalakot and surrounding districts. Authorities are said to have deployed paramilitary personnel to control the situation, resulting in violent confrontations and casualties. The unrest has prompted calls for an independent investigation into the incidents and the use of force.

The MEA reiterated India’s position that Pakistan must be held accountable for alleged human rights violations in territories under its control. It also urged the international community to closely monitor the situation, stating that the reported developments highlight ongoing concerns over civil liberties and governance in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir.
