MDMK Leaders Debate Future In DMK Alliance Ahead Of Key Party Meeting

MDMK reviews alliance with DMK amid rising internal pressure.

The Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), led by veteran politician Vaiko, is reportedly facing a crucial political crossroads as internal discussions intensify over whether to continue its alliance with the DMK or align with the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government headed by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay.

In the recently concluded Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, the MDMK contested as part of the DMK-led alliance and was allotted four constituencies, including Sirkazhi, Kadayanallur, Modakkurichi and Madurai South. The party secured two seats—winning in Sirkazhi and Kadayanallur—while its remaining candidates lost, reflecting a mixed electoral outcome for the alliance partner.

The current debate within the party has gained momentum following the formation of the TVK government, which has altered the state’s political dynamics. Several MDMK functionaries are reportedly urging Vaiko to reconsider the party’s long-standing association with the DMK and explore a fresh alignment with the ruling TVK, suggesting a potential reshaping of alliance politics in Tamil Nadu.

Attention on the issue increased after MDMK Principal Secretary and Tiruchirappalli MP Durai Vaiko met Chief Minister Vijay during his visit to the Tiruchi East Assembly constituency. Vijay had travelled to the constituency to thank voters after vacating the seat upon assuming office as Chief Minister. The meeting sparked speculation about a possible shift in political positioning by the MDMK leadership.

In his remarks to reporters, Durai Vaiko said the party had contested on the DMK symbol and described MDMK as a separate political movement, adding that its alignment with the DMK symbol limited its ability to extend support to TVK. His statement has further fuelled internal debate and public speculation about a possible realignment in the near future.

Political observers now expect the upcoming MDMK General Council meeting scheduled for June 27 in Chennai to be decisive. The meeting is likely to review the party’s future strategy, including whether to break away from the DMK alliance and potentially extend support to the TVK government, a move that could significantly alter the state’s political equations ahead of future electoral battles.
