MDMK Chief Meets CM Vijay: Speculation Over Possible TVK Alliance Shift Emerges

MDMK chief's meeting with CM Vijay sparks speculation about possible political realignment.

Fresh political speculation has emerged in Tamil Nadu after Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) General Secretary Vaiko met Chief Minister and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president Joseph Vijay, fuelling discussions over the possibility of another Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) ally moving closer to the ruling alliance. The meeting comes just days after MDMK MP Durai Vaiko, the veteran leader's son, also met the Chief Minister.

The developments have attracted attention because the MDMK contested the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election as part of the DMK-led alliance and secured two seats on the DMK's Rising Sun symbol. However, the party's decision to abstain during the trust vote faced by the minority TVK government was widely viewed as an indication that it was keeping its political options open.

Political observers are now closely watching the MDMK General Council meeting scheduled later this month, where the party is expected to discuss its future political strategy. Any decision regarding alliance changes or support to the ruling dispensation is likely to be taken at that meeting, making it a significant event in the state's evolving political landscape.

The speculation has gained further momentum as several former DMK allies have already joined the Vijay-led alliance. The Congress, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) are now part of the ruling arrangement and share power in the government, while the Communist Party of India (CPI) and Communist Party of India (Marxist) continue to extend outside support.

Despite the growing political buzz, Vaiko has maintained that only the MDMK General Council has the authority to decide the party's future course. He stated that his meeting with Chief Minister Vijay focused on public issues, particularly concerns over the possible return of Vedanta-linked copper operations in Thoothukudi through a proposed green copper manufacturing project.

Addressing the media after the meeting, Vaiko said he urged the Chief Minister not to allow any attempt by Vedanta to re-establish copper operations in Thoothukudi, where the Sterlite Copper plant was shut down in 2018 following environmental concerns and widespread protests that culminated in police firing, resulting in the deaths of 13 protesters. Vedanta has not commented on the claims, and whether the recent meetings indicate a broader political realignment or remain issue-based discussions is expected to become clearer after the MDMK's upcoming General Council meeting.
