MCD Plans Solar Panels for 989 Buildings
MCD aims to cut power costs sustainably
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is set to install rooftop solar power plants on 989 municipal buildings to slash electricity costs and reduce reliance on conventional energy, officials announced on July 9, 2025. Partnering with NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Limited (NVVN), a subsidiary of NTPC, the initiative will leverage the RESCO model, where NVVN funds installation, operation, and maintenance, recovering costs via a fixed tariff under a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).
The project targets a solar capacity of 10-15 megawatts (MW), pending a detailed energy audit. Currently, MCD operates 574 solar photovoltaic plants with a 13.25 MWp capacity across its properties. Between 2022 and 2024, 26 rooftop plants (1.08 MWp) were commissioned with NVVN at Rs 4.72 per kWh. The new installations, utilizing NVVN’s 10-15 MW surplus capacity from Delhi Police projects, will have tariffs ranging from Rs 4.25 to Rs 4.92 per unit—more cost-effective than alternatives from the Delhi government’s IPGCL.
The proposal, slated for discussion at the MCD House meeting on July 10, 2025, aligns with India’s goal of 50% non-fossil fuel energy by 2030, as per the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). Covering schools, offices, and community facilities, the project will advance clean energy adoption and support national sustainability targets.
