On the 91st birth anniversary of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) founder Kanshi Ram, party chief Mayawati paid tribute to his legacy, urging supporters to strengthen his vision of social justice and economic empowerment. Speaking on Saturday, she emphasized the BSP’s commitment to uplifting the ‘Bahujan Samaj’—the marginalized majority—from poverty, unemployment, and caste-based oppression, calling the vote a “master key” to political power.
Self-styled as the “iron lady,” Mayawati contrasted the BSP’s track record with rival parties, asserting that her leadership prioritizes tangible results over empty promises. “Uttar Pradesh has witnessed how the BSP, under my guidance, delivered all-around development for Bahujans during its tenure, while others relied on hollow claims,” she said. The party marked the occasion nationwide with homage events, reaffirming its mission.
Kanshi Ram, born on March 15, 1934, in Punjab’s Rupnagar, dedicated his life to mobilizing backward classes. He founded BAMCEF in 1971 and the Dalit Shoshit Samaj Sangharsh Samiti in 1981 before launching the BSP in 1984. A two-time Lok Sabha MP—representing Etawah (1991) and Hoshiarpur (1996)—he also served in the Rajya Sabha from 1998 to 2004. Kanshi Ram passed away on October 9, 2006, in Delhi, aged 71.
Mayawati’s remarks underscore the BSP’s ongoing push for equity, rooted in Kanshi Ram’s ideals, as it navigates Uttar Pradesh’s complex political landscape ahead of future electoral battles.
