Mayawati Directs BSP Workers Not To Protest On Women’s Reservation Bill Issue

Mayawati warns BSP workers against protests, reiterates sub-quota demand.

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Wednesday issued a strong advisory to her party workers, cautioning them against holding protests over the women’s reservation issue following the recent defeat of the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill in Parliament. She emphasized that discipline within the party must be strictly maintained and that workers should avoid any action that could be seen as going against the official stand of the organisation.

In a statement shared on X, Mayawati reiterated that the BSP continues to support 33 per cent reservation for women in both the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. However, she firmly stressed that within this quota, there must be a separate reservation for women belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes. She said this sub-quota is essential to ensure meaningful and equitable representation for marginalised communities in political institutions.

The BSP chief explained that without a dedicated sub-quota, women from disadvantaged social groups would not receive fair opportunities in elected bodies. She noted that the party’s position on this issue, first clearly stated on April 15, remains unchanged despite recent parliamentary developments. Mayawati added that the BSP’s demand is also rooted in the principle of proportional representation, including its call for 50 per cent reservation for women in proportion to their population.

At the same time, she issued a strict directive to party cadres, instructing them not to organise demonstrations or protests on the matter under any circumstances. She asked workers to focus instead on spreading awareness of the party’s official position and ensuring that there is no confusion among supporters. According to her, maintaining organisational discipline is crucial at a time when political messaging must remain consistent and focused.

Mayawati also mentioned that she was travelling to New Delhi for party-related work and urged workers to strengthen the BSP’s organisational base ahead of upcoming elections. She encouraged them to expand the party’s reach and actively communicate its policies on governance and social justice. She further asked cadres to highlight the BSP’s developmental work during its tenure in Uttar Pradesh.

She also pointed to past infrastructure projects, including expressways and the Noida airport, which she said were conceptualised during BSP rule but delayed due to what she described as obstacles created by previous governments. Concluding her message, Mayawati said that effective governance, balanced development, and improved law and order are possible only under BSP leadership guided by the principle of “rule of law.”
