Mathura Dispute: Supreme Court Postpones Hearing, Negotiations Between Litigants Underway

The Supreme Court on Wednesday deferred the hearing of a plea related to the Krishna Janmabhoomi-Shahi Idgah mosque dispute in Mathura after being informed that discussions were underway between Hindu parties involved in the matter. The court was told that the parties were attempting to resolve issues concerning the representation of devotees in the ongoing legal proceedings. The case was being heard by a bench of the Supreme Court in connection with a plea filed by a Hindu party challenging a 2025 order of the Allahabad High Court.

The plea questioned the High Court’s decision to recognise another Hindu party, involved in a separate suit, as a representative of all devotees of Lord Krishna. During the hearing, the court was informed that Hindu litigants were engaged in talks to determine whose lawsuit should proceed as the main representative case. Following the submission, the Supreme Court decided to defer the matter to allow further discussions between the parties.

The dispute relates to the Krishna Janmabhoomi-Shahi Idgah mosque complex in Mathura, where several Hindu petitioners have filed suits seeking various legal remedies, including claims related to the ownership and religious character of the disputed site. The Shahi Idgah mosque is located adjacent to the Krishna Janmabhoomi temple complex. The Allahabad High Court has been hearing multiple suits connected to the dispute and has passed several orders concerning their maintainability and legal proceedings.

The 2025 order challenged before the Supreme Court involved the question of whether a particular Hindu party could represent the broader community of Lord Krishna devotees in the case. The court’s move provides additional time for discussions before it considers the legal challenge against the High Court order.

The Krishna Janmabhoomi-Shahi Idgah dispute is among several longstanding religious property disputes in India that have reached various courts over the years. The matter has drawn significant public attention due to its historical, religious and legal implications. The Supreme Court is expected to take up the matter again after receiving further updates from the parties involved regarding the ongoing discussions. The court will then consider the legal questions raised in the petition and decide the future course of proceedings.
