Massive Rural Sports Festival Kicks Off August 10
Isha Gramotsavam unites 50,000 rural athletes across India.
The 17th edition of Isha Gramotsavam, India’s largest rural sports festival, will commence on August 10 in Mysore, spanning six states: Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Puducherry, and newcomer Odisha. Over 35,000 villages will participate, with more than 50,000 athletes, including 5,000 women, competing in this vibrant celebration of rural sports.
Founded by spiritual leader Sadhguru in 2004, the festival features men’s volleyball and women’s throwball, with 6,000 teams advancing from cluster-level matches to divisional rounds, culminating in a grand finale on September 21 at the Adiyogi, Isha Yoga Centre in Coimbatore.
Swami Pulaka, festival coordinator, emphasized its focus on everyday rural participants like farmers, fishermen, and homemakers, excluding professional athletes. “Teams must be formed within the same village panchayat, and registration is free,” he said.
The event offers a Rs 67 lakh prize pool, with Rs 1 lakh each for the men’s and women’s category winners. Alongside competitive sports, Isha Gramotsavam will feature traditional rural games and cultural activities, fostering community spirit and reviving India’s rural sporting heritage.
