Massive 7.4-Magnitude Earthquake Sparks Tsunami Alert Off Russia’s Kamchatka Coast

A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on July 20, 2025, at 06:49 UTC, triggering a tsunami warning for coastal areas within 300 km of the epicenter.

The quake, centered 144 km east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky (population 180,000), followed a 6.7-magnitude tremor minutes earlier. Both occurred at a depth of 20 km, with hazardous waves possible, potentially reaching the city by 07:28 UTC.
