Massachusetts Man Wielded Sword Against FBI Before Arrest Over Trump Death Threats
Andrew Emerald arrested after sword standoff with FBI over years of Trump death threats online.
A 45-year-old man accused of making repeated death threats against U.S. President Donald Trump was arrested following a tense standoff with federal agents, during which he allegedly brandished a sword. The suspect, identified as Andrew Emerald, was taken into custody on Wednesday after authorities moved to execute an arrest warrant at his residence.
According to court documents, Emerald faces an eight-count indictment filed in federal court in Springfield, Massachusetts, linked to a series of threatening social media posts made over the past year. In one of the posts from May 2025, he allegedly wrote that either Trump would be “dead and in the ground by 2026” or he would take action himself. Prosecutors said the posts included references to traveling to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.
The threats first came to the attention of the Federal Bureau of Investigation after a concerned citizen reported Emerald’s online activity. According to an affidavit, when warned that such threats were illegal, Emerald reportedly responded by claiming he had been making similar statements for years and would resort to violence if confronted by law enforcement officials.

When FBI agents arrived at his residence in Great Barrington to carry out the arrest, Emerald initially refused to surrender. Authorities said he later emerged while holding a long metallic sword, escalating the situation into a potentially dangerous standoff. Investigators noted that he had previously referenced the weapon in online posts, including threats describing its intended use.
Law enforcement officials, including local police and an FBI crisis negotiation team, were deployed to manage the situation. Emerald allegedly told officers they would have to shoot him before he would comply, prompting negotiators to engage in extended communication efforts to defuse the situation safely.
The standoff eventually ended without violence after a police officer managed to contact Emerald by phone and persuade him to surrender. He was taken into custody without further incident, and several bladed weapons were reportedly seized from the scene. Authorities have not disclosed additional details about his legal representation, and the case is expected to proceed through the federal judicial system.
