Manipur Violence Continues, 2 Killed In Kamjong Militant Attack
Two killed in Kamjong attack as Manipur violence escalates.
Violence continued to grip Manipur on Thursday after suspected militants carried out a pre-dawn attack on Kultuk village in Kamjong district, leaving two people dead and six houses set ablaze. The incident came amid rising tensions across the state following the recovery and arrival of six bodies, believed to be missing Naga civilians, at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in Imphal.
According to police officials, the attack took place around 4:30 am when an armed group equipped with sophisticated weapons opened fire on villagers. Two residents were killed in the assault, while two others sustained injuries and were rushed to hospital for treatment. Security forces were immediately deployed in the area as authorities worked to contain the situation and prevent further escalation.
The latest violence erupted just hours after six bodies were brought to JNIMS, triggering emotional unrest among large gatherings of family members, community leaders, and civil society representatives who had assembled since Wednesday evening. As the remains arrived late at night, tensions escalated inside and around the hospital premises, prompting security personnel to use tear gas shells to disperse the crowd and restore order.

Clashes were also reported between security forces and agitated mourners, including relatives of the deceased, as emotions ran high over the handling of the bodies. Officials later secured the remains and shifted them to the hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination. Senior officers from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and other security agencies reached the site to monitor developments closely.
The six bodies were reportedly recovered earlier from Karam Vaiphei village in Kangpokpi district, an incident that has triggered widespread anger and unrest across multiple regions of the state. In Senapati district, unidentified persons set fire to goods-laden trucks in the Karong area, while an office of the Naga People’s Front (NPF) was also attacked by an angry mob. Similar protests and demonstrations were reported from Tamei as tensions spread.
In response to the killings, the United Naga Council (UNC) announced a 24-hour total shutdown across Naga-inhabited areas, condemning the incident and demanding action from both the state and central governments. The council has called for the revocation of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with Kuki militant groups, arrests of those involved in the killings, and the declaration of the Kuki National Front (President Group) as a terrorist organisation.
Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh expressed deep anguish over the incidents and strongly condemned the killings, as authorities continue efforts to restore order in the violence-hit state amid mounting ethnic and political tensions.
