Manipur Faces Ongoing Influx of Myanmar Migrants
Ex-CM praises Assam Rifles for biometric tracking
Former Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has raised alarms over the "real and ongoing" influx of illegal immigrants from Myanmar, commending the Assam Rifles for their efforts in collecting biometric data to monitor the situation. Speaking on X on Wednesday evening, Singh referenced a statement by Assam Rifles Director General Lt Gen Vikas Lakhera, who revealed during a Manipur University event that approximately 42,000 individuals had crossed into Manipur since December 31, 2024.
Singh emphasized the proactive measures, stating, “It’s reassuring that these individuals are under close watch, housed in secure locations, and monitored strictly.” He shared a video of Lakhera’s address, underscoring the deployment of over 20 Assam Rifles battalions along the 398-km Indo-Myanmar border in Manipur. Lakhera noted that biometric data of these entrants has been shared with relevant agencies, and he urged public cooperation to curb illegal immigration.
The former CM, who has long highlighted demographic changes due to illegal migration, said, “The need for such measures confirms the undeniable truth of this ongoing influx.” Singh’s comments align with his earlier assertions that unchecked immigration fuels ethnic tensions and drug trafficking in the state. In 2024, Manipur deported 77 Myanmar nationals and identified over 10,000 illegal immigrants, with biometric exercises ongoing in districts like Tengnoupal and Kamjong. As the state pushes for border fencing and the scrapping of the Free Movement Regime, Singh’s remarks signal a continued focus on securing Manipur’s borders.
