Mango Clothing Founder's Son Arrested In Spain Over Father's Death in December 2024
Mango founder's son arrested over father's death.
Spanish police have arrested Jonathan Andic, the eldest son of Mango fashion empire founder Isak Andic, in connection with the billionaire businessman’s death during a hiking trip in December 2023. Catalan regional police confirmed on Tuesday that Jonathan Andic, 45, was taken into custody and escorted in handcuffs to a court in Martorell near Barcelona for questioning. The development marks a major turn in a case that was initially treated as an accidental death.
Isak Andic, one of Spain’s wealthiest businessmen, died after falling from a height near the Salnitre caves in the Montserrat mountain region close to Barcelona. Authorities at the time stated that the 71-year-old retail magnate appeared to have slipped while hiking in an area known for steep drops and rocky ravines. Jonathan Andic was reportedly alone with his father during the incident. A judge closed the investigation in January 2025 after finding no immediate evidence of criminal wrongdoing.
However, the case was reopened in October 2025 following fresh investigative findings by Catalonia’s regional police force, the Mossos d'Esquadra, along with prosecutors and judicial authorities. Reports in Spanish media stated that investigators identified inconsistencies in Jonathan Andic’s testimony, prompting authorities to re-examine the circumstances surrounding the death. According to reports, police had seized Jonathan’s mobile phone shortly after the incident as part of the investigation process.

Sources close to the Andic family have strongly defended Jonathan Andic and expressed “total” confidence in his innocence. Family representatives said they believed the investigation would ultimately confirm that the death was accidental and called for respect toward the principle of presumption of innocence. Jonathan has consistently denied any involvement in his father’s death and has maintained that the tragedy resulted from an accidental fall during the hiking trip.
Spanish newspaper reports have also pointed to tensions within the family and the business in the years before Isak Andic’s death. Media reports cited testimony from Isak’s partner, professional golfer Estefania Knuth, describing at times strained relations between father and son, particularly regarding Jonathan’s role within the company. Jonathan reportedly received greater operational responsibility in Mango in 2014 before Isak later resumed tighter control amid business difficulties. Reports also mentioned ongoing disagreements linked to the businessman’s estate and inheritance matters.
Born in Istanbul, Mango founder Isak Andic moved to Barcelona with his family in the late 1960s and established his first Mango store in 1984. The brand later expanded into one of the world’s leading fashion retailers, operating thousands of stores across more than 120 markets globally. At the time of his death, Forbes estimated Isak Andic’s fortune at approximately $4.5 billion. Authorities in Catalonia have released limited details regarding the renewed investigation, stating that judicial secrecy surrounding the case remains in place.
