Man Dies After Motorcycle Plunges Into Unmarked, Unfenced Excavation Pit Near Manjhawali Bridge

Hospital manager dies after motorcycle plunges into unlit, unfenced pit in Greater Noida.

A 45-year-old man died in a tragic road accident in Greater Noida after his motorcycle plunged into an unlit and unfenced excavation pit near the Manjhawali Bridge on Sunday night, highlighting fresh concerns over road safety and civic negligence in the region.

The victim, identified as Atul Kumar Joshi, a hospital manager from Faridabad’s NIT-1 area, was reportedly travelling towards Noida when the accident occurred. According to reports, the road at the accident site abruptly ends due to ongoing or incomplete construction work, but the stretch lacked basic safety measures such as lighting, barricades, or warning signs. As a result, Joshi is believed to have been unable to notice the sudden drop.

The impact of the fall proved fatal, and he died on the spot due to severe injuries. However, the accident went unnoticed for several hours. His body, along with the damaged motorcycle, was discovered only the next morning—around 8 to 9 hours later—by farmers who were heading to nearby fields.

Following the discovery, local residents alerted the authorities, and the Dankaur police arrived at the scene to recover the body. It was then sent to Dankaur Civil Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Officials identified the deceased using the registration details of his motorcycle, which helped confirm his identity.

The incident has once again drawn attention to infrastructure safety lapses in rapidly developing areas of Noida and Greater Noida. Locals have raised concerns that the stretch where the accident occurred remains poorly managed, especially at night, making it hazardous for commuters unfamiliar with the route.

This tragedy also adds to growing worries about recurring fatal accidents linked to incomplete construction zones and inadequate safety barriers in the region. Residents point out that similar incidents have occurred in the past, including another fatal case in Noida where a vehicle fell into an unmarked water-filled roadside ditch, raising questions about accountability and preventive measures by civic authorities.

Authorities are expected to review the circumstances surrounding the accident and assess whether negligence in maintaining safety standards contributed to the death.
