Mamata Directs DMs: Strictly Follow SC Orders on Electoral Roll Revision, No Harassment
CM stresses humanitarian approach amid voter difficulties in SIR hearings.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has instructed district magistrates to rigorously comply with the Supreme Court’s guidelines during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, emphasising that citizens should not face undue hardship. The directive came during an unscheduled appearance at a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Nandini Chakraborty at the state secretariat Nabanna on Tuesday.
Banerjee highlighted widespread complaints from people encountering problems due to “logical discrepancies” flagged in SIR hearings. She urged officials to adopt a compassionate and humanitarian lens while conducting the process. “All hearings must strictly adhere to the apex court’s directives,” a senior official quoted the CM as saying, adding that valid documents recognised by the Supreme Court should be accepted without question.
The Chief Minister specifically ordered that receipts be issued immediately upon submission of documents and that alternative arrangements be provided for voters unable to attend scheduled hearings. She reiterated that while the Election Commission’s mandate must be fulfilled, ongoing state development programmes should face no disruption whatsoever.

Banerjee assured district officials of her government’s full backing, stating they need not fear repercussions while implementing the SIR fairly and efficiently. The intervention follows her earlier letter to the Chief Election Commissioner, where she criticised alleged insensitivity toward migrant workers during the revision exercise in West Bengal.
The move comes at a time when the SIR process has sparked concerns over potential voter disenfranchisement, particularly in border and migrant-heavy districts. Mamata’s emphasis on strict adherence to judicial directives and people-friendly implementation aims to balance electoral integrity with citizen welfare.
