Mamata Banerjee to Oversee Gangasagar Mela Preparations Ahead of Makar Sankranti

Mamata Banerjee to review preparations for massive Gangasagar mela drawing lakhs of pilgrims.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will convene a high-level meeting on Monday at the state secretariat, Nabanna, to review preparations for the upcoming Gangasagar mela, scheduled for mid-January in South 24 Parganas district. The meeting will include cabinet colleagues, the chief secretary, home secretary, DGP, and other senior officials.

The Gangasagar mela attracts lakhs of Hindu pilgrims from across India who gather to take a holy dip at the confluence of the Ganges and the Bay of Bengal on Makar Sankranti. Officials anticipate a larger turnout this year due to the absence of other major religious events such as the Kumbh Mela.

During the meeting, CM Banerjee is expected to assign specific responsibilities to senior ministers and review the deployment of personnel for crowd management, health services, sanitation, and other logistical arrangements. She will also personally visit Gangasagar to inspect preparations and ensure smooth conduct of the event.

Security will be a key focus, with coordination among state police, local authorities, and disaster management teams to handle the anticipated influx of pilgrims. Officials have emphasized the importance of maintaining law and order, while providing adequate facilities for devotees.

In addition to logistical and security arrangements, the administration is also preparing to address emergency medical situations, traffic management, and environmental safeguards. The mela’s success depends on careful planning and coordinated efforts across multiple government departments.

The West Bengal government’s proactive approach reflects its commitment to ensuring a safe, organized, and spiritually enriching experience for pilgrims while upholding public safety during one of the state’s largest religious gatherings.
