Mamata Banerjee Slaps Man Amid Trinamool-BJP Tensions At Kolkata Rally

Mamata Banerjee's rally incident sparks fresh political debate.

Former West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) Supremo Mamata Banerjee found herself at the centre of a political controversy after a video purportedly showed her slapping a party worker during a protest march in Kolkata. The rally, organised by the TMC to protest the alleged rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl in Baruipur, witnessed clashes between party supporters and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers, leading to heightened tensions in the city.

The procession faced repeated disruptions as TMC and BJP workers confronted each other along the route. Eyewitnesses reported incidents of pushing, shouting and slogan-raising, while security personnel intervened to prevent the situation from escalating further. According to reports, BJP supporters formed human chains at certain locations and raised slogans against the TMC, while some TMC workers also faced objects being thrown at them during the march.

As the rally approached its conclusion near Banerjee’s residence, a large crowd gathered around the area, prompting Banerjee to step out and interact with supporters. During the commotion, Banerjee was seen striking a man, later identified as a member of her own party, while attempting to move people away and restore order. The incident was captured on video and quickly circulated on social media, drawing widespread political attention.

Following the clashes, Banerjee accused the BJP of deliberately attempting to disrupt the rally despite the Calcutta High Court permitting the event after modifying its original route. She alleged that women participants in the procession were assaulted and criticised the police, claiming they failed to act effectively to control the situation. Banerjee also alleged that BJP supporters organised demonstrations and used loud music to obstruct the rally.

The BJP rejected the allegations and maintained that it had not prevented Banerjee from holding the march. Party leaders instead accused the Trinamool Congress of failing to improve the state's political environment and criticised the ruling party over issues related to law and order. The exchange of allegations further intensified the ongoing political rivalry between the two parties ahead of future electoral contests.

The incident has added another layer of controversy to an already charged political atmosphere in West Bengal. While the video of Banerjee's actions has become a major talking point, the broader focus remains on the violence surrounding the rally and the competing claims made by the TMC and BJP regarding responsibility for the clashes. Authorities are expected to examine the incidents reported during the procession as political tensions continue in the state.
