Mamata Banerjee Set to Meet CEC Over SIR Controversy on Monday

Mamata to meet CEC over SIR row on Monday.

A delegation of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) led by party Chief Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to meet Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar on Monday evening to discuss concerns over the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in West Bengal. The meeting is set for 4 PM, according to Election Commission officials.

The TMC Chief had announced earlier that she would take the issue to Delhi, alleging harassment of citizens under the guise of SIR. Speaking in Singur on Wednesday, Banerjee claimed the exercise was being used as a backdoor attempt to implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state.

Banerjee launched a strong attack on both the Election Commission and the BJP, accusing them of targeting people through “unspeakable harassment.” She warned that she would not allow anyone to be sent to detention camps or for NRC enforcement in West Bengal.

The SIR, which involves verification and updating of voter lists, has been a flashpoint in the state, with opposition parties claiming it is being misused for political purposes. Banerjee has consistently termed the exercise as a tool of “arrogance and pride” by the ruling establishment.

Election officials confirmed that the CEC has allotted time specifically for the TMC delegation to present their grievances. The outcome of this high-profile meeting is expected to have significant implications for the ongoing electoral process in West Bengal.

With tensions escalating, the meeting is being closely watched as a test of the Election Commission’s handling of the SIR process and the broader debate over NRC implementation, which remains a highly sensitive issue in the state.
