Mamata Banerjee Announces Cricket Stadium in Siliguri to Be Named After Richa Ghosh

West Bengal to build a new cricket stadium in Siliguri named after rising star Richa Ghosh to inspire young athletes.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday announced that a new cricket stadium will be built in Siliguri and named after Richa Ghosh, India’s rising wicketkeeper-batter who played a pivotal role in the country’s recent Women’s World Cup victory. The announcement comes as yet another recognition from the state government for the 22-year-old cricketer’s exceptional achievements on the international stage.

Ghosh, who hails from Siliguri in north Bengal, has emerged as one of the brightest stars in Indian women’s cricket. Her consistent performances with the bat and gloves were crucial to India’s World Cup triumph. The Chief Minister’s latest gesture follows a series of state honours already conferred upon the young player, including the prestigious Banga Bhushan Award, a cash prize, and a gold chain presented during a felicitation ceremony after India’s win.

Richa was also appointed as Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in the West Bengal Police earlier this year—a rare honour for a sportsperson of her age. Officials confirmed that the proposed cricket stadium will be developed with modern infrastructure designed to host national-level matches and nurture young cricketing talent in the region. The move is expected to significantly boost sports development in north Bengal.

Speaking at an event in Kolkata, Chief Minister Banerjee said, “Richa has made Bengal and the entire nation proud. We want young players from Siliguri and across the state to be inspired by her journey. Naming a stadium after her is a small token of our respect and pride.”

The announcement has sparked celebrations in Siliguri, where residents and local sporting associations hailed the government’s decision as a historic moment for women’s cricket in the region. For Richa Ghosh, the honour marks yet another milestone in a career already defined by determination, talent, and trailblazing achievements that continue to inspire a new generation of athletes in India.
