Maharashtra’s Village Committees Gear Up for Maratha Quota Certifications

Village panels trained for Maratha quota checks.

The Maharashtra government has initiated training for village-level committees tasked with processing Kunbi caste certificate applications for Maratha community members, as mandated by a government resolution (GR) issued on September 2.

The move, announced by the Social Justice and Special Assistance Department, responds to demands by Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange for recognizing Kunbi heritage, which qualifies for Other Backward Class (OBC) status in Maharashtra.

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Collector Dilip Swami confirmed that the committees, formed under the GR, will verify applications and historical records, including references from the Hyderabad gazetteer, before submitting reports to issuing authorities.

“No applications for Kunbi caste certificates are pending in the district, and the process is yet to be finalized,” Swami told reporters, noting that training guidelines are still awaited. Scheduled to begin on September 11, the training will equip panels to ensure accurate verification, a critical step in implementing the Maratha quota policy.

This initiative marks a significant advancement in addressing the Maratha community’s push for reservation benefits, aiming to streamline certification while upholding procedural integrity.
