Maharashtra State Board Suspends 81 Beed District Teachers Over ChatGPT Exam Cheating Scandal
Maharashtra suspended 81 Beed district teachers for aiding ChatGPT-based cheating in board exams.
The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education has suspended 81 teachers in Beed district for allegedly helping students cheat during the ongoing Class 10 and Class 12 board examinations using the AI chatbot ChatGPT. The action is part of a wider crackdown by authorities to protect the integrity of the state’s examination system.
According to officials, the incident came to light during the Maharashtra SSC Examination and the Maharashtra HSC Examination. Investigators found that teachers at certain examination centres allegedly assisted students by accessing ChatGPT to obtain answers during the exams, allowing them to unfairly complete question papers.
The largest number of suspensions were reported at the Chausala Examination Centre, where authorities believe the misuse of technology was particularly widespread. Education officials described the incident as a serious breach of exam regulations and a misuse of emerging technology that undermines the credibility of public examinations.

In response, the board has launched a detailed investigation into the matter and is reviewing the security arrangements at exam centres across the state. Authorities are examining how teachers and students managed to access AI tools during examinations and whether additional staff members were involved in facilitating the cheating.
Officials have warned that strict disciplinary action will be taken against anyone found violating examination rules. The board emphasized that maintaining fairness and transparency in the evaluation system is essential to ensure the credibility of academic qualifications awarded by the state.
The Maharashtra HSC Board Exams 2026 began on February 10 and will conclude on March 11, while the Maharashtra SSC Board Exams 2026 started on February 20 and are scheduled to end on March 18. Authorities say additional monitoring measures may be introduced in future exams to prevent the misuse of digital tools such as AI chatbots.
