Maharashtra Schools Declare Six-Day Diwali Vacation for Students Across the State
Maharashtra students to enjoy six-day Diwali break beginning October 20.
As Diwali approaches, the Maharashtra Education Department has unveiled a generous six-day school holiday from October 20 to October 25, 2025, covering key festive days such as Dhanteras, Chhoti Diwali, Diwali, Lakshmi Puja, Govardhan Puja, and Bhai Dooj. With Sundays on October 19 and October 26 bookending the break, students will enjoy an extended period to immerse themselves in the Festival of Lights, which symbolizes the triumph of truth over evil. According to the Drik Panchang, Diwali falls on October 20, with the Amavasya Tithi spanning from 3:44 PM on October 20 to 5:54 PM on October 21.
The holiday schedule, aligned with the Maharashtra Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE), applies to all government and Zilla Parishad schools across Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Nashik, and Thane. Some private and CBSE-affiliated schools may extend the break based on their internal calendars, with certain institutions offering optional revision sessions beforehand to prepare for mid-term exams. This extended break provides students and teachers an opportunity to participate in traditional rituals like Lakshmi Puja and Bali Pratipada while fostering family bonding and travel.
City-specific schedules confirm that schools in Mumbai and Thane will remain closed from October 20 to October 25, while some Pune institutions may opt for additional days off. Nagpur and Nashik schools will adhere to the state-mandated holiday period. Parents are advised to check official school notices for any updates or variations in reopening dates to ensure clarity on the schedule.
