Maharashtra Land Controversy: Hazare Demands Action Against VIP Family Scams

Anna Hazare demands accountability in Pune land deal probe.

Anti-corruption activist Anna Hazare stated on Friday that ministers must be held responsible if their children engage in misconduct, directly addressing the controversy surrounding a Rs 300 crore land transaction in Pune involving a company co-owned by the son of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. Speaking to reporters in Ralegan Siddhi, Hazare emphasized that moral values instilled within families form the foundation of ethical governance, and their absence leads to systemic irregularities. He urged the government to implement stringent policies and ensure decisive action against those found guilty.

The veteran activist, known for spearheading nationwide anti-corruption campaigns, described the incident as deeply unfortunate and reflective of a broader erosion of integrity in public life. He insisted that any proven irregularities in the land deal must face rigorous consequences, regardless of the individuals involved. Hazare’s remarks underscore his long-standing advocacy for transparency and accountability, particularly when public resources are at stake.

In response, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar clarified in Mumbai that neither his son Parth nor the business partner was aware the land belonged to the state, and the transaction has been cancelled. He informed the media after discussions with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis that a government-appointed committee is investigating the matter and will submit its report within one month. Pawar reiterated his complete non-involvement in the deal, a position he first articulated when the issue surfaced on Thursday.

The controversy centers on state-owned land in Pune acquired under questionable circumstances, prompting widespread scrutiny and political backlash. The ongoing inquiry aims to determine the legality of the process and identify any procedural lapses. Hazare’s intervention has intensified calls for structural reforms to prevent conflicts of interest and misuse of authority by those connected to political leadership.

As the investigation proceeds, Hazare’s statements serve as a stern reminder of the need for unwavering ethical standards in public office. The outcome of the probe will be closely watched, with potential implications for governance practices and public trust in Maharashtra’s administrative framework.
