Maharashtra CM Fadnavis Describes Suvendu Adhikari Swearing-In As National Victory
Fadnavis praises Suvendu Adhikari’s swearing-in with strong national remarks.
Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday congratulated Suvendu Adhikari after he took oath as West Bengal’s first BJP chief minister, describing the development as a “victory for India.” The swearing-in ceremony marked a major political shift in the state following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s victory in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.
Speaking to reporters, the Maharashtra deputy chief minister said West Bengal holds significant strategic importance from a national security perspective and expressed satisfaction over the formation of the new government. He also extended his congratulations to the newly inducted cabinet ministers who joined the Adhikari-led administration.
Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as chief minister in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several senior BJP leaders. The ceremony was attended by Union ministers Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, JP Nadda and Dharmendra Pradhan, along with chief ministers and senior leaders from multiple BJP-ruled states.

The BJP formally chose Adhikari as leader of its legislature party after the party secured a landmark victory in the state elections, ending decades of political dominance by regional parties in West Bengal. BJP leaders had publicly backed his elevation following the declaration of results earlier this month.
Adhikari’s rise gained additional attention after he secured victories in two of the state’s most closely watched constituencies — Bhabanipur and Nandigram. According to figures released by the Election Commission of India, he defeated then chief minister Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur by a margin of more than 15,000 votes, while also retaining Nandigram comfortably.
The BJP’s victory and Adhikari’s appointment are being viewed as a watershed moment in West Bengal politics, potentially reshaping the state’s political landscape after years of dominance by the All India Trinamool Congress. Political observers expect the new government’s early decisions to be closely watched both within the state and nationally.
