Maharashtra Allopathic Doctors Protest Homeopath Registration With MMC
Allopathic doctors protest state’s decision to register homeopaths.
Over 1.8 lakh allopathic doctors across Maharashtra launched a 24-hour strike on Thursday, protesting the state government’s decision to allow homeopathic doctors with a one-year Certificate Course in Modern Pharmacology (CCMP) to register with the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) and prescribe allopathic medicines in select cases. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) Maharashtra, led by president Dr. Santosh Kadam, claims this move threatens patient safety and healthcare quality.
The strike, affecting private and public hospitals, spared emergency and critical services to ensure patient care continuity. The controversy began earlier this year when the state issued a directive allowing CCMP-certified homeopaths to register with the MMC. After IMA Maharashtra deferred a planned strike on July 11 following discussions with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the government briefly withdrew the notification. However, a fresh government resolution on September 5 reinstated the registration process, reigniting the doctors’ outrage.
IMA Maharashtra, alongside resident doctors’ organizations, the Federation of All India Medical Association, the Association of State Medical Interns, and the Government Medical College Association, united in opposition, arguing the policy creates confusion and risks patient safety. “This decision undermines the standards of medical practice,” Dr. Kadam stated, emphasizing the need for specialized training in allopathy.

The strike reflects deep concerns among allopathic practitioners about the integration of homeopaths into their domain, with fears it could erode trust in healthcare delivery. As tensions persist, the medical community awaits the government’s response to their demands.
