Magnitude 5.9 Earthquake Strikes Afghanistan, 8 Killed

Afghanistan earthquake kills eight, causes damage and panic

At least eight people were killed after a 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck parts of Afghanistan, authorities said, with tremors causing widespread panic and damage to homes in several regions. The earthquake hit in the early hours, shaking buildings and forcing residents to flee their homes in fear. Initial reports indicated that several structures, particularly in rural areas, collapsed due to the intensity of the tremors. Many of these homes were not built to withstand seismic activity, increasing the risk of casualties and injuries.

Emergency response teams were deployed soon after the quake to assess the damage and assist affected communities. Rescue operations are ongoing, with personnel working to locate survivors who may be trapped under debris. Medical teams have also been mobilised to provide treatment to the injured, with nearby health centres placed on high alert.

Afghanistan is situated in a seismically active region where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates converge, making earthquakes a frequent occurrence. In recent years, the country has experienced several deadly quakes that have exposed vulnerabilities in infrastructure and disaster preparedness, particularly in remote and mountainous regions.

Officials warned that the death toll could rise as information continues to emerge from hard-to-reach areas. Communication challenges and damaged infrastructure have slowed the assessment process, raising concerns that the full scale of the disaster may not yet be known.

Humanitarian agencies are monitoring the situation closely and may step in to support relief efforts if required. The latest earthquake underscores the ongoing risks faced by communities across Afghanistan and highlights the urgent need for stronger building standards and more effective disaster response systems to mitigate the impact of such natural disasters.
