Madurai’s Historic Central Theatre Catches Fire Near Meenakshi Temple, Emergency Teams Respond

A major fire broke out at the old Central Theatre complex near the Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai on Friday evening, sending thick smoke into the air and prompting a large-scale firefighting operation. Flames were seen rising from the theatre building as fire and rescue personnel rushed to the spot and worked to bring the blaze under control. The incident occurred close to the western tower of the historic Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, raising concerns because of the theatre's proximity to other buildings and a major religious landmark in the city.

Visuals from the spot showed flames emerging from the building while thick clouds of smoke billowed from the premises. Fire and Rescue Services teams deployed multiple vehicles to tackle the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby structures. A senior Fire and Rescue Services officer said the fire had been contained within the theatre building and had not spread to adjacent properties. The officer said personnel were working to extinguish the flames completely and that 15 fire tenders had been deployed as part of the operation.

The official said the firefighting teams were closely monitoring the situation to ensure that the blaze remained confined to the theatre premises. The large number of fire tenders deployed at the location was aimed at bringing the flames under control as quickly as possible. The theatre's location in an established part of Madurai, close to the temple complex and other buildings, made it important for emergency personnel to prevent the fire from spreading. Firefighters continued their efforts even after the blaze was contained within the building.

A senior police officer said there were no casualties in the incident and that no one had been injured. According to the officer, the firefighting operation began swiftly because three fire tenders were already available in the vicinity when the incident was reported. Their immediate deployment allowed emergency personnel to begin tackling the flames without delay, while additional fire tenders were brought in to strengthen the response. Police and fire officials remained at the location as the operation continued and monitored the situation around the theatre.

The Central Theatre is one of the older theatre complexes in Madurai and is situated close to the western tower of the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple. The theatre has remained closed for film screenings since the COVID-19 period, according to local reports. Its location near one of the city's most prominent landmarks has added significance to the incident.
