Madras High Court Directs Income Tax Department to File Reply on Vijay Affidavit Discrepancies

The Madras HC seeks the Income Tax Department's reply to a petition alleging a Rs 100-crore income discrepancy in Vijay's election affidavits.

In a setback ahead of the Tamil Nadu elections, the Madras High Court has directed the Income Tax Department to respond to a petition alleging a discrepancy of over ₹100 crore in election affidavits filed by actor-turned-politician Vijay, who is contesting his first election under his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.

The case stems from a petition filed by a voter from Perambur, who has raised concerns over inconsistencies in the declared income figures submitted by Vijay in nomination affidavits for two different constituencies. The petitioner has sought clarification on the alleged mismatch, prompting judicial scrutiny just days before polling.

According to details presented in the petition, Vijay’s affidavit filed for the Tiruchirappalli constituency reportedly declared an income of around ₹220 crore, while another affidavit submitted for Perambur allegedly listed approximately ₹115 crore. This difference of about ₹105 crore has formed the basis of the legal challenge, raising questions over the accuracy of disclosure.

The Madras High Court, taking note of the allegations, has sought a formal response from the Income Tax Department to verify the financial disclosures and examine whether there are any irregularities. The court’s direction is seen as a procedural step to ensure transparency in the electoral nomination process.

Vijay is set to make his political debut in a multi-cornered contest, with significant attention on key constituencies such as Tiruchirappalli East and Perambur. In Tiruchirappalli East, he is expected to face DMK candidate Inigo S. Irudayaraj, while in Perambur he is up against sitting MLA R.D. Sekar, making both contests politically high-stakes.

With Tamil Nadu scheduled to vote on April 23 and counting set for May 4, the development adds further intensity to an already closely watched election. Political observers believe that the outcome in several constituencies may depend on local dynamics and voter alignments, while legal and administrative developments continue to unfold in the final phase of campaigning.
