Madhya Pradesh Sets Up High-Level Panel to Probe Indore Contaminated Water Deaths

Committee to fix accountability and prevent future tragedies in ‘cleanest city’.

The Madhya Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav, has constituted a senior-level committee to conduct a thorough investigation into the tragic deaths caused by contaminated water in Indore, widely regarded as the country’s cleanest city. The announcement came during proceedings in the Madhya Pradesh High Court on Tuesday, where the state informed a division bench in Indore about the probe panel.

Headed by Additional Chief Secretary Sanjay Kumar Shukla, the committee comprises senior bureaucrats tasked with examining the incident from multiple angles—including administrative lapses, technical failures, and other contributing factors. Beyond identifying root causes, the panel has been empowered to fix accountability on responsible officials and recommend strong preventive measures to avert similar incidents in the future.

The committee is authorised to access all relevant records, reports, and information from concerned departments and conduct on-site inspections as needed. It has been directed to submit a detailed report to the state government within one month. The High Court’s division bench, however, refrained from passing any immediate observations or orders on the government’s proposal.

The formation of the inquiry committee follows public outcry and mounting pressure over the preventable tragedy, which has raised serious questions about water quality monitoring and civic infrastructure in a city consistently ranked number one in Swachh Survekshan surveys. Opposition parties have strongly criticised the state administration, accusing it of negligence and demanding swift justice for the victims’ families.

As Indore grapples with the aftermath, the probe is expected to scrutinise municipal water supply systems, treatment processes, and oversight mechanisms. The government’s move aims to restore public confidence while addressing systemic vulnerabilities exposed by the incident.
