Madhya Pradesh Receives Heavy Rain, IMD Issues Yellow Alerts for Several Districts

Scattered rain and thunderstorms hit Madhya Pradesh; IMD issues alerts, warns residents to take precautions.

Scattered but intense rainfall swept across Madhya Pradesh on Friday, bringing thunderstorms, lightning, and temporary relief from the sweltering heat, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Several districts in both eastern and western parts of the state experienced moderate to heavy showers, prompting authorities to issue weather alerts.

The IMD’s Bhopal Meteorological Centre issued a yellow alert for isolated to scattered thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph. The warning covers divisions including Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur, Sagar, Rewa, and Gwalior. Light to moderate rain is expected at some locations, with isolated heavy spells possible over the coming days. The five-day forecast (March 19-23) indicates continued rainfall activity, mainly in central and eastern Madhya Pradesh.

Authorities advised farmers to postpone outdoor activities, secure livestock, and avoid standing under trees during thunderstorms. While temperatures are expected to remain largely stable, maximums will likely stay between 35-39°C and minimums between 18-26°C in most districts. Residents reported sudden dark clouds, thunder, and brief heavy downpours, which caused minor waterlogging in low-lying areas and slowed traffic on key highways.

According to the IMD’s special rainfall report for March 20, Badnawar in Dhar district received the highest rainfall at 19.2 mm, followed closely by Godadongri in Betul with 18 mm. Other notable measurements included Badwani in Barwani (14.8 mm), Sondwa in Alirajpur and Khalwa in Khandwa (14 mm each), and Bhainsdehi and Multai in Betul (13 mm each). Betul district accounted for four of the top ten rain-recording stations, reflecting concentrated rainfall in the western division.

East Madhya Pradesh also saw significant showers, with Damoh and Chhindwara districts recording up to 12 mm at several stations. While the rainfall provided temporary relief from early summer heat, officials urged caution on slippery roads and during lightning events, emphasizing the importance of adhering to safety advisories.

The IMD’s Bhopal centre will continue monitoring the weather system and provide timely updates. Citizens have been requested to follow official alerts and exercise caution during outdoor activities over the next few days.
