Lt Gen Sharma Praises Troops’ Disaster Response

Northern Army Commander praises troops for Chisoti disaster relief.

Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma, Northern Army Commander, visited Kishtwar and Rajouri districts to commend the Indian Army’s exceptional disaster relief efforts following a devastating cloudburst in Chisoti village on August 14. The catastrophic event, which struck the remote motorable village en route to the revered Machail Mata temple, claimed 65 lives and left 33 people missing, prompting a swift and robust response from the military.

“Lt Gen Pratik Sharma, Army Commander Northern Command, visited hinterland formations and units at Rajouri and Kishtwar to compliment troops for their resilient action, as also swift and successful execution of HADR efforts during Chishoti cloudburst,” the Northern Command announced on X. Over 300 troops, equipped with heavy machinery, were deployed for search, rescue, and relief operations in the affected area, showcasing the Army’s commitment to aiding the community in crisis.

The cloudburst unleashed flash floods that wreaked havoc, obliterating a makeshift market and a langar site set up for the annual Machail Mata yatra, damaging 16 homes, three temples, four water mills, a 30-metre-long bridge, and over a dozen vehicles. In a significant achievement, Army engineers constructed a Bailey bridge over the Chisoti nullah by August 17, restoring vital connectivity to the isolated village and the Machail Mata shrine, a key pilgrimage site. The Army also deployed all-terrain vehicles to bolster rescue operations, ensuring aid reached those in need.

The Army’s rapid response, including the deployment of specialized equipment and personnel, has been instrumental in supporting the local administration and providing relief to affected residents.

Lt Gen Sharma’s visit highlights the military’s pivotal role in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR), reinforcing public trust in their ability to respond to crises. As rescue efforts continue, the focus remains on locating the missing and rebuilding the shattered infrastructure of Chisoti.
