LPG Shortage Halts Main Course At Delhi High Court Lawyers’ Canteen

Delhi HC Lawyers’ Canteen halts main meals due to LPG shortage; sandwiches and salads still served.

The ongoing shortage of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) has temporarily affected the functioning of the Delhi High Court Lawyers' Canteen, forcing it to halt preparation of main course meals. In a notification issued on March 11, the canteen management stated that the unavailability of LPG cylinders has disrupted cooking operations.

“This is to respectfully inform you that due to the unavailability of the LPG gas cylinder at present, we regret that we are unable to prepare and serve the main course items in the Lawyers Canteen,” the notification read. The message added that there is currently no definite timeline for restoration of the gas supply, and meal preparation will resume once LPG becomes available.

Despite the disruption, the canteen assured that food items not requiring cooking will still be served. Offerings such as sandwiches, salads, fruit chaats, and similar refreshments remain available for lawyers and court staff. The memo, signed by Sandeep Sharma from the Lawyers’ Canteen, requested the understanding and cooperation of those affected.

The LPG shortage is reportedly linked to disruptions in global supply chains, stemming from ongoing tensions in West Asia involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. These conflicts have affected fuel logistics in certain parts of India, leading to localized shortages of natural gas and cooking fuel.

On Tuesday, the Central Government invoked the Essential Commodities Act to regulate the distribution of natural gas in response to the crisis. The move comes amid constraints on shipping activity through the Hormuz Strait, a critical maritime route for global energy supplies, which has further compounded fuel scarcity in India.

The Delhi High Court canteen is one of several institutional kitchens affected by the shortage, highlighting the broader impact of international conflicts on domestic energy supply and daily operations within government and public facilities.
