LPG Rises ₹89 In Three Months, Opposition Questions PM Modi's Energy Strategy

LPG prices rise ₹89 in three months; Opposition targets PM Modi.

Domestic liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) prices were increased by ₹29 per cylinder on Sunday, taking the retail price of a standard household cylinder in Delhi to ₹942. The latest revision marks the second hike in three months, resulting in a cumulative increase of ₹89 since March, as rising global energy costs linked to tensions and conflict in West Asia continue to impact fuel prices.

The earlier increase came in March, when domestic LPG prices were raised by ₹60 per cylinder following volatility in international energy markets triggered by the conflict involving the United States and Iran. The continued instability in the region has affected crude oil and energy supply chains, leading to higher costs for consumers in several countries, including India.

The latest price hike has drawn criticism from Opposition parties, which have accused the Narendra Modi-led government of failing to shield households from the impact of global energy shocks. Opposition leaders questioned whether India's efforts to diversify its energy imports and strengthen energy security had adequately protected consumers from rising fuel costs amid the ongoing crisis in West Asia.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge strongly criticised the increase, saying higher LPG prices were “incinerating the kitchens of the common people”. Kharge also alleged that the Modi government had increased domestic LPG prices by ₹530 over its 12 years in office and questioned why Bharatiya Janata Party leaders were not protesting the hikes as they had done during previous governments.

The Centre, however, has maintained that Indian consumers continue to pay significantly lower prices for cooking gas compared with those in several neighbouring countries and advanced economies. Government officials have argued that despite global market pressures, measures taken by the administration have helped moderate the impact on domestic consumers.

The debate over LPG prices comes at a time when inflation and household expenses remain politically sensitive issues. With energy markets continuing to respond to developments in West Asia, both the government and the Opposition are expected to intensify their arguments over fuel pricing, subsidies and the broader management of India's energy security strategy.
