LPG Cylinder KYC Becomes Mandatory With Biometric Verification

Centre mandates biometric KYC for all domestic LPG consumers to ensure safe and verified supply.

The Indian government has mandated biometric Aadhaar authentication, known as e-KYC, for all domestic liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) consumers to ensure seamless cylinder bookings and subsidy transfers. This directive from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, announced on March 15, 2026, requires users of state-run oil companies—Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL)—to verify their identity digitally via facial recognition.

The process eliminates the need to visit LPG distributors, allowing completion from home using smartphone apps in just a few minutes. It aims to enhance record accuracy, curb misuse of subsidies, and maintain supply chain integrity amid recent global disruptions.

Consumers can initiate e-KYC by downloading their oil company's app—IndianOil ONE for Indane, mHPGas for HP Gas, or MyBPCL Gas for Bharat Gas—alongside the Aadhaar FaceRD app. After logging in, users follow on-screen prompts to perform a facial scan linked to their Aadhaar number, with success updating their LPG account status instantly for continued refills and DBT subsidies. A QR code or the portal at pmuy.gov.in/e-kyc.html provides direct access.

For Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) beneficiaries, who receive subsidized cylinders, annual biometric verification is required before the first refill of each fiscal year to avoid subsidy halts or delivery suspensions. Regular domestic users face no such frequency but must comply to prevent service interruptions. The free, paperless process supports India's digital push in essential services.

This move coincides with LPG supply concerns linked to West Asia tensions, which have caused shortages in several cities and prompted a ministry committee to review logistics. By authenticating genuine consumers, the government seeks to prioritize legitimate households and optimize distribution. Helpline 1800-2333-555 offers support for technical issues.

Non-compliant users risk temporary blocks on bookings until verification, underscoring the urgency as stocks stabilize. With India consuming over 31 million tonnes of LPG annually, this e-KYC rollout reinforces transparency in a critical household fuel sector vital for millions.
