Locals Rescue Man From Delhi Drain Using Discarded Cable Amid Safety Concerns

A man who slipped into an open drain near Mathura Road in Sarita Vihar on Wednesday was pulled to safety by local residents using a discarded cable after no formal rescue equipment was available at the scene. The incident occurred when the man lost his footing on the footpath and fell into the drain running alongside the busy stretch. People nearby quickly noticed the fall and assembled to assist.

With limited resources on hand, the group located a discarded cable lying close by and lowered it into the drain. The man gripped the cable, enabling those above to haul him out through coordinated effort. A passer-by recorded the sequence, and the resulting video has circulated widely, drawing praise for the rapid and collective response of the bystanders.

The successful extraction has highlighted both the value of immediate community action and the persistent hazards created by uncovered drains in the capital. This marked the third such incident reported in the Sarita Vihar area within a span of 20 days, underscoring recurring safety concerns along the Ali Vihar drain that borders Mathura Road.

Only days earlier, on August 22, a 15-year-old boy fell into an open drain in the nearby Jasola locality while flying a kite. His body was recovered on Tuesday. In the hours before the recovery, the boy’s father, Awadhesh Kumar, was observed clearing garbage from the drain with his bare hands in the hope of locating his son.

While the man in Sarita Vihar benefited from the presence of alert locals who intervened before the situation deteriorated further, the Jasola teenager did not survive. The two episodes, occurring in close succession, have drawn attention to the risks posed by open drains and the potential consequences when basic protective measures are absent.

Authorities and residents continue to face questions about maintenance and safety infrastructure along these water channels, particularly in densely trafficked corridors where pedestrians and motorists pass daily. The viral video of the latest rescue serves as both a record of successful intervention and a reminder of the underlying vulnerabilities that remain unaddressed.
