Landowners Cheated in J-K, Police Carry Out Raids Across Districts

Police raid multiple sites in fraudulent compensation case.

The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Jammu and Kashmir Police launched a series of raids across Bandipora and Budgam districts on Wednesday, targeting a massive fraudulent land compensation scheme linked to the 400 KV DC Samba-Amargarh Transmission Line. The operation, conducted by the Crime Branch Kashmir, aims to dismantle a sophisticated scam that defrauded genuine landowners of crores of rupees through fake bank accounts and non-existent beneficiaries.

According to a police spokesperson, the investigation was triggered by a complaint alleging that compensation meant for landowners in Watrad, Dalabal, and Kachwari villages in Khansahib tehsil, Budgam district, was siphoned off to fictitious individuals.

The probe revealed a nexus involving employees of M/s Unitac Power Transmission Limited, land brokers, and certain bank officials who orchestrated the fraud. “The compensation, amounting to crores, was fraudulently withdrawn using fake identities, depriving rightful landowners of their dues,” the spokesperson stated.

Key suspects named in the case include Mushtaq Ahmad Lone, Bilal Ahmad Mir, Ranjit Singh, and Samaliya Kumar, all employees of M/s Unitac Power Transmission Limited, along with other accomplices. The police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, charging the accused with criminal conspiracy and fraud.

The raids, conducted with precision across multiple locations, underscore the J-K Police’s commitment to cracking down on economic offenses. Authorities seized documents and other evidence to further unravel the extent of the scam, which exploited the compensation process for land acquired for the transmission line project. The investigation has sent shockwaves through the region, raising concerns about oversight in large-scale infrastructure projects.

As the probe deepens, the EOW is working to identify additional conspirators and recover the misappropriated funds. The case highlights the vulnerability of landowners to fraudulent schemes and the urgent need for stricter monitoring of compensation disbursements.

With the J-K Police intensifying their efforts, affected landowners are hopeful for justice and the restoration of their rightful claims in this high-stakes fraud case.
