The threat of a lake formed after a glacier collapse bursting near the China-Nepal border has eased, according to Chinese authorities, as satellite observations indicate that the water body has begun to shrink. The development comes after devastating flash floods and a mudslide struck the region earlier, raising concerns about the possibility of another sudden release of water downstream.
The lake lies near the confluence of two rivers and straddles the border between China's Tibet region and Nepal. It was formed by debris following the glacier collapse, creating a natural reservoir that experts and authorities had warned could pose a serious secondary disaster risk. A sudden breach could send a large volume of water and debris downstream, potentially threatening rescue and relief operations in affected areas.
Satellite images taken between Thursday and Saturday morning showed that water in the lake had been gradually flowing out, according to information from China's Water Resources Ministry. The observations indicated that the reservoir was slowly reducing in size rather than continuing to accumulate water. The change has lowered immediate concerns over a sudden lake burst, although authorities continue to monitor the site.

The potential lake breach had been a major concern because of the unstable conditions created by the glacier collapse and the earlier flooding. The latest satellite observations suggest that natural drainage is gradually reducing the lake's volume, lowering the immediate possibility of a catastrophic breach. However, the earlier glacier collapse and flooding have left the region vulnerable to further hazards. Continued surveillance of the lake and surrounding waterways will remain important as rescue operations and disaster-response efforts continue along the China-Nepal border.
