Kuki-Zo Council Ends Manipur Shutdown, Stands Firm Against Free Movement

The Kuki-Zo Council in Manipur lifted its indefinite shutdown in the state’s hill areas on Thursday evening, March 13, ending a protest that began at midnight on March 9.

The Kuki-Zo Council in Manipur lifted its indefinite shutdown in the state’s hill areas on Thursday evening, March 13, ending a protest that began at midnight on March 9. Despite this, the council remains steadfast in opposing Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s directive for unrestricted movement across the state, calling it a threat to their pursuit of justice.

In a statement, the council declared, “While the shutdown has been lifted, the free movement announced by the Home Ministry shall be vehemently opposed by the Kuki-Zo people, as it undermines and dilutes the justice process.” Shah’s March 1 order aimed to restore free travel on all Manipur routes starting March 8, with strict action promised against obstructions.

The shutdown followed violent clashes on March 8 in Kangpokpi district, where Kuki protesters blocked a bus from Imphal, resulting in the death of 30-year-old Lalgouthang Singsit and injuries to over 40 others.

The council reiterated its demand for a separate political administration, arguing it’s essential for justice, peace, and progress for the Kuki-Zo community. “We urge authorities to recognize our legitimate demands and work toward a peaceful resolution,” the statement added.

The unrest stems from ethnic tensions between the Kuki-Zo and Meitei communities, which have divided Manipur since May 2023, killing over 250 and displacing thousands.

Singsit, killed during the Gamghiphai protest, was laid to rest on Thursday at the Kuki-Zo Martyr Cemetery in Phaijang, Kangpokpi district, marking a somber end to the shutdown.
