Koraput Bans All Non-Veg Sales on Republic Day to Promote Non-violence?
Koraput district bans all non-veg food sales on Republic Day.
The Koraput district administration in Odisha has announced a district-wide ban on the sale of all non-vegetarian food items on January 26, 2026, in observance of the 77th Republic Day. The prohibition includes meat, chicken, fish, eggs, and other non-veg products, and will remain in force for the entire day.
An official order to this effect has been issued by the District Collector, directing all concerned authorities to strictly implement the ban. Tehsildars, Block Development Officers (BDOs), and Executive Officers of urban local bodies have been instructed to issue local notifications and ensure compliance within their respective jurisdictions.
According to the district administration, the decision has been taken to observe Republic Day in the spirit of non-violence. Officials noted that a similar practice is followed every year on Gandhi Jayanti, October 2, as a mark of respect to Mahatma Gandhi’s principles of ahimsa.

To ensure smooth implementation, officials have also been asked to monitor markets and commercial establishments across Koraput district. Any violations of the order are expected to invite immediate action as per administrative norms.
The move has once again brought attention to the district’s efforts to align national observances with symbolic gestures of peace and non-violence, reinforcing the cultural and ethical significance of Republic Day celebrations in the region.
