Kolkata's 'Rain Fury': 10 dead, 9 from Electrocution, Prompts Mamata's Compensation Offer

West Bengal CM offers compensation and jobs for rain tragedy kin.

In response to the devastating impact of heavy rainfall across West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced on Wednesday a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the families of those who lost their lives in rain-related incidents. The state has been grappling with severe waterlogging and tragic accidents, with at least 10 fatalities reported since Tuesday, including nine deaths due to electrocution in Kolkata.

The Chief Minister expressed deep sorrow over the losses and emphasized the state’s commitment to supporting affected families. “Money cannot replace lives, but we will ensure financial aid and opportunities for the kin of the deceased,” Banerjee said during a review of the flood-like situation in Kolkata and nearby districts.

She confirmed that the state government would provide Rs 2 lakh as ex gratia to the families of those electrocuted, adding that special employment opportunities would be arranged for the victims’ relatives if the Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation (CESC) fails to offer jobs.

Banerjee also called on CESC to step up and provide Rs 5 lakh as compensation to the families of those who died due to exposure to unattended or open electric wires amid widespread waterlogging in the city. “I urge CESC to take responsibility and support these grieving families with adequate compensation,” she stated, highlighting the need for accountability from the power utility.

The heavy rainfall that battered Kolkata and surrounding areas on Tuesday led to significant disruptions, with large parts of the city submerged under water. The flooding caused chaos, stranding commuters and damaging infrastructure. The electrocution incidents, primarily linked to waterlogged areas with exposed wiring, have raised concerns about urban safety and infrastructure maintenance during monsoons.

Banerjee’s administration has faced criticism in the past for its handling of monsoon-related crises, but the chief minister assured swift action to address the current situation. “We are working round-the-clock to restore normalcy and ensure such tragedies are minimized in the future,” she said. The government is also coordinating with local authorities to clear waterlogged areas and prevent further accidents.

The announcement of financial aid and potential job opportunities reflects the state’s efforts to provide immediate relief and long-term support to the affected families, as West Bengal braces for more challenges during the monsoon season.
