Kolkata Police Deploy Mobile X-Ray Scanners Ahead of Festival Season
Two mobile X-ray units deployed to speed up luggage checks at crowded festival venues and rallies.
In preparation for the upcoming festive season, including major events like Durga Puja, the Kolkata Police have introduced two high-tech, vehicle-mounted X-ray baggage scanners to bolster security measures. Costing nearly Rs 2 crore, these portable units are designed for rapid and efficient bag inspections in high footfall areas, such as rally venues and tourist spots.
A senior police officer explained that the initiative addresses the challenges of manual checks during large gatherings, where crowds swell significantly, making traditional methods impractical and time-consuming. This deployment aims to ensure public safety without disrupting the flow of people, reflecting a proactive approach to festival security.
The scanners, mounted on air-conditioned vehicles for easy mobility, can be swiftly transported to any location requiring enhanced surveillance. Each unit is capable of scanning up to 300 bags per hour, offering a substantial improvement over manual inspections by providing thorough checks without causing delays.
The officer highlighted that these machines feature advanced 21-inch monitors and colour-coded imaging systems, which differentiate materials based on density—such as metallic, organic, inorganic, or liquid properties—to quickly identify potential threats. This technology enables officers to respond effectively to suspicious items, enhancing overall operational efficiency during peak events.
One of the key advantages of the new scanners is their ability to resolve past user complaints regarding damage to personal belongings. For instance, older X-ray systems often corrupted camera films or memory cards, but the updated safeguards in these units ensure that sensitive data and devices remain intact during scans. This user-friendly upgrade not only prioritises security but also builds public trust, as it minimises inconvenience for citizens attending festivals or public gatherings. The focus on non-intrusive technology underscores Kolkata Police's commitment to modernising their infrastructure.
