Kolhapur District Administration Confirms Adequate Fuel Stock Despite Midnight Queue Scenes

The Kolhapur administration confirms an adequate fuel supply as viral rumours trigger unnecessary panic buying.

Panic buying triggered by misinformation has led to long queues at fuel stations across parts of Kolhapur, even as officials insist there is no actual shortage of petrol or diesel in the district.

Scenes of chaos have been reported from areas like Bhudargad and Kagal, where motorists and farmers have been lining up for hours, often carrying extra containers amid fears that supplies may soon run dry. However, the district administration has clarified that the crisis is largely driven by rumours rather than a real supply disruption.

The panic appears to be linked to the ongoing tensions in West Asia and concerns around the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global shipping route. While geopolitical developments have sparked fears about fuel availability, officials say there has been no direct impact on fuel supplies to Maharashtra.

Authorities explained that the issue is primarily logistical. Fuel stations are designed to handle steady daily demand, but sudden surges caused by panic buying have overwhelmed the system. When demand spikes sharply, pumps run dry faster than tankers can replenish them, creating what officials describe as a “phantom shortage".

District officials, including collector Amol Yedge, have assured that adequate buffer stock is available. Measures such as deploying flying squads and monitoring distribution are being implemented to curb hoarding and black marketing and to ensure equitable access to fuel.

At the national level, Narendra Modi has reviewed the situation with senior ministers, focusing on maintaining uninterrupted supply chains for petroleum products and other essentials. Officials reiterated that the government is taking proactive steps to stabilise logistics and counter misinformation, which remains the biggest challenge in the current situation.
