Defence minister to meet victims, aid assured

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is arriving in Jammu on Sunday to meet survivors of the devastating cloudburst in Kishtwar district’s Chisoti village, where rescue teams are still searching for 32 people reported missing, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said.

Sinha, who visited the injured being treated at the Government Medical College (GMC) in Jammu, told reporters that Singh will meet the victims and, depending on weather conditions, may also travel to the affected village. “If weather permits, we will visit Chisoti. Otherwise, the Defence Minister will interact with the injured at GMC before returning to Delhi,” the LG said.

The deadly cloudburst struck Chisoti on August 14, claiming 65 lives and injuring more than 100 people. Sixteen patients remain under treatment at GMC, with doctors reporting their condition as stable.

Sinha assured the affected families of complete support, noting that the administration has already spent Rs 4.13 crore on relief and rehabilitation efforts. He said both the Union government and the J&K administration are committed to ensuring proper resettlement of the victims.

“Every effort will be made to provide timely help and full rehabilitation to all those affected,” he added. Rescue and search operations are continuing amid challenging terrain and weather in the remote mountainous region.
