Kishtwar Cloudburst: 38 Killed, Rescue Efforts Intensify

A devastating cloudburst in Kishtwar claims lives, prompting urgent rescue operations with national support.

The catastrophic cloudburst in Chositi village, Kishtwar district, Jammu and Kashmir, has claimed at least 38 lives, including two Central Industrial Security Force personnel, with many others feared trapped, officials reported on Thursday. The disaster struck the remote mountain village, leaving a trail of destruction and prompting an all-out rescue and relief operation.

President Droupadi Murmu expressed profound grief, calling the loss of lives “extremely tragic.” In a post on X, she extended heartfelt condolences to the affected families and prayed for the success of ongoing relief efforts.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha confirmed that rescue operations are in full swing, with men and machinery deployed to the site and additional teams mobilized. Of the 120 individuals rescued so far, 38 are in serious condition, and officials warn the death toll may rise.

Sinha briefed Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who assured all possible assistance to support the operations. The combined efforts of various agencies underscore the urgency of addressing this tragedy in one of India’s most challenging terrains.
