Kerala, Tamil Nadu on Alert as Southern States Brace For Heavy Rain

Southern India is preparing for another period of widespread rainfall, with the India Meteorological Department forecasting an active monsoon spell across Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh over the next few days. Authorities have urged residents to monitor official advisories as some areas could experience intense rain and stormy conditions.

Tamil Nadu and Puducherry have been placed under a yellow alert for August 6 and 7 by the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai. The warning indicates the possibility of heavy rainfall at isolated locations, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and squally winds that could affect travel and outdoor activities.

Heavy rain is expected to continue at isolated places across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal until August 8. Twelve districts of Tamil Nadu are likely to face a greater impact because of weather conditions linked to a super El Niño event. However, the intensity and distribution of rainfall may vary considerably between districts.

Kerala also remains alert following recent periods of incessant monsoon rain and flooding. Residents in Ranni in Pathanamthitta district were seen moving through floodwaters outside inundated homes earlier this week. Further rainfall could worsen conditions in low-lying locations and areas where the soil is already saturated.

Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh are also expected to receive widespread rainfall during the active monsoon phase. Localised heavy spells may cause waterlogging, reduced visibility and slower traffic movement. People living near rivers, unstable slopes and flood-prone areas should follow instructions issued by district administrations and disaster-management authorities.

Residents across the affected states have been advised to remain cautious during thunderstorms, avoid sheltering beneath trees and stay away from damaged electrical lines or flooded roads. Weather warnings can change depending on the movement and intensity of rain-bearing systems, making regular monitoring of IMD and local government updates important.
