Kerala Sailor Among Four Indians Killed in Russian Strike Off Odesa, Ukraine

Akhil Joyan, a 26-year-old seafarer from Kerala, was among four Indian nationals killed in a Russian attack on the cargo vessel MV Golden Leo off the coast of the Ukrainian city of Odesa. The young sailor, a resident of Vellarikkundu in Kasaragod district, had recently become engaged and was preparing to get married in the coming months. His death has left his family and local community in mourning, with relatives awaiting further information and the completion of repatriation formalities.

Joyan had been working in the merchant navy for nearly six years after joining at the age of 19 and was reportedly planning to change jobs in search of better opportunities. According to people close to the family, he was the only son of Joyan, who works at an electrical shop, and Sally, an insurance agent. Family friends said he played a key role in supporting his parents, who had recently built a new house with hopes of a brighter future.

Shobi Joseph, a ward member of Vellarikkundu in the Balal Grama Panchayat, recalled meeting Akhil during his engagement ceremony around three months ago. He described the sailor as a disciplined and well-respected young man who was widely known in the locality and was also a popular tug-of-war player. Joseph said Akhil had returned to work about a month ago after spending time at home and was looking forward to his wedding, which was scheduled to take place in the next two months.

The family learnt about Akhil's death through an email from the shipping company on Monday evening. Local representatives said they are working with political leaders and government authorities to gather more information and complete the necessary procedures for bringing his body back to India. The tragic news has shocked residents of Vellarikkundu, where Akhil was known for his humble nature and strong ties to the community.

The Kerala Chief Minister's Office said the Non-Resident Keralites Affairs (NORKA) Department has been directed to coordinate with the Russian Consulate and the Ministry of External Affairs to obtain further details about the incident and assist the bereaved family. The state government said it would extend all possible support during the repatriation process and other required formalities.

According to foreign media reports, Ukraine's Sea Ports Authority said the cargo vessel, flying the flag of Guinea-Bissau, was struck by Russian forces shortly after departing the port of Odesa on Sunday. The ship was carrying Ukrainian corn at the time of the attack. Reports said 10 crew members, including five sailors from Syria, were killed, while eight others were rescued. Authorities continue to investigate the incident as diplomatic efforts remain focused on assisting the victims' families and ensuring the safe return of those affected.
